What is an Individualized Education Program [IEP]?

An Individualized Education Program is a legally binding document designed to answer the needs of children who have disabilities, so far as educational needs are concerned. It has specific goals for learning, adjustments, and services tailored to support the child’s academic and developmental progress. In most cases, an IEP is made in collaboration with parents, teachers, and specialists, so it gives child-centered methodology.

Some parts of an IEP:

  1. Current functioning: The complete description of what the child can do in both academic and functional living.
  2. Objectives: Specific, measurable objects to be accomplished within a period.
  3. Special services: The type of therapies or intervention needed, including speech therapy or occupational therapy.

Regular review and update enable the program to stay abreast with the change in needs of the child and enable him to learn academically and socially.
