What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy, for instance, is a treatment approach in which the healer uses playful activities to help patients  talk out their feelings, argue about their problems, and understand more about emotional and social development. Guided play enables children to normalize experience and develop positive coping strategies. The technique is very useful when children cannot verbally relate to their feelings.

Types of play therapy:

  1. Directive Play Therapy: The child’s play is guided by the therapist with a clear aim of tackling some problems.
  2. Non-Directive Play Therapy: The child plays freely, and the therapist only observes and occasionally enters the play to understand the child’s emotions and behavior.
  3. Play Therapy increases creativity, emotional control, and problem solving skills; hence, it is an effective tool for controlling trauma, anxiety, and any other behavioral disorders.
