WHAT IS HYDROCEPHALUS?

Hydrocephalus can be defined as a state in which there is trap of the cerebrospinal fluid in the skull causing the brain to swell. In kids, this additional fluid, depending on the amount, may raise ICP (intracranial pressure) and alter the development of the brain. Possible manifestations are increased head size, poor coordination, or developmental issues. According to the time of onset, hydrocephalus may be congenital or acquired.

It is usually managed by a tube known as a shunt that assists in getting rid of the excess fluid so that the size of the brain becomes normal. The prompt diagnosis and treatment of the problem are crucial for properly handling the situation and nurturing the child.
