WHAT IS ATHETOID CEREBRAL PALSY?

Athetoid cerebral palsy, often known as dyskinetic cerebral palsy because it impairs muscular movements, is the second most prevalent kind of cerebral palsy. It is a life-long, non-progressive impairment resulting from birth trauma or early childhood injury to the brain. Children with athetoid CP fluctuate between hypertonia and hypotonia, further complicating their muscle control and coordination. This condition also significantly influences mobility and growth, leading to challenges throughout childhood.

To avoid severe health complications and enhance quality of life, early identification and intervention are crucial. The management of athetoid cerebral palsy typically involves a combination of therapies, medications, and sometimes surgical interventions. These approaches aim to alleviate symptoms and optimize function, thereby mitigating long-term challenges associated with the condition.
